John L. Nau, III is Chairman of the federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and one of its public members, with a term of office: 2001-2009.[1]
Nau is president and CEO of Silver Eagle Distributors, L.P., the largest beer distributor in Houston, Texas, a position he has held since 1990.[2]
He was appointed to the Texas Historical Commission by Governor Ann Richards in 1993, and was reappointed to the commission by Governor George W. Bush in 1999. Since 1995, Nau has served as chairman of the commission. In addition, he serves on the board of directors of The Civil War Preservation Trust, the National Park Foundation, and he is a member of the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum Advisory Committee.[3]
Nau also serves on the board of Houston's Downtown Historic District, is an advisory board member for the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance, and is a charter member of the Monticello Cabinet in Charlottesville, Virginia. He also sits on the executive committee of the National Capital Campaign of the University of Virginia, and the Board of Directors of the Greater Houston Partnership.[4]
Nau graduated from the University of Virginia, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1968. He and his wife Barbara reside in Houston. He was a fundraiser for John McCain in 2008. They have two daughters and one granddaughter.[5]
